Measuring soil contamination in the field - Ecoprobe

The Ecoprobe method

Measuring soil contamination in the field - Ecoprobe The Ecoprobe method arose from long-term field experience and allows for the precise determination of soil contamination by hydrocarbons and other volatile organic compounds.

The method utilises the simultaneous measurement of eight contaminants/ soil parameters which are important for assessing soil contamination. These include e.g. measurement of volatile organic compounds, methane, total petroleum hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide, acids and soil temperature.

The built-in computer records and processes the data, displaying the results in real time on the analyser’s display. Special software is subsequently used to process the data obtained in the field which can assess the data received and use it to create clear 3D graphs and summaries.

The device is equipped with a fully integrated automatic GPS unit for storing navigational data, allowing for the precise identification of the location of every measurement.

Soil contamination survey methodology

Measuring soil contamination in the field - Ecoprobe
The soil contamination survey methodology using the manual ECOPROBE analyser is based on the use of a vertical drill-hole into the sub-soil and the subsequent use of a soil probe to draw up soil gases to the surface for their measurement and assessment. This is ensured by a small, powerful pump which is located directly inside the device.

A sampling period is determined which is sufficient for drawing up the necessary amount of gases to undertake an effective analysis.

A typical soil contamination survey in the field is seen in the picture on the right, with the soil gas being sucked up from the drill-hole and analysed directly in the device.
